5 Ties to Begin Your Shibari Journey

Shibari, the Japanese art of rope bondage, has gained popularity in recent years for its beauty, artistry, and sensual nature. If you're interested in exploring the world of Shibari, learning a few foundational shibari ties is essential.

These ties will not only serve as a solid starting point but are also commonly used in more complex knot patterns.

In this article, I'll introduce you to five knots that are great for beginners who have already mastered basic knots, like the single column or double column tie. These ties are not overly complicated, but will provide a solid foundation for your journey into Shibari. (They can get very complicated though! So be sure to practice these ones until you master them!)

Shibari Tie #1: Dragonfly

Dragonfly is the first tie I learned when I began my Shibari journey, and it quickly became my favorite. Not only is it visually impressive, but it's also relatively easy to tie. However, it's important to note that Dragonfly should not be used for suspensions as it lacks the necessary integrity to ensure the model's safety.

Dragonfly offers endless possibilities for customization. You can modify it to fit your own personal style and preferences, making each tie unique. Whether you're using it for a photoshoot or practicing your technique, Dragonfly is an excellent tie for getting comfortable with your ropes and learning how to maintain the right tension.

Shibari Tie #2: Karada

Karada is perhaps one of the most widely known knots in Shibari, and one of the easiest ties!! It's a classic, and you'll find countless videos and tutorials demonstrating how to tie it. The beauty of Karada lies in its versatility and safety.

When tied correctly, Karada doesn't put tension on the neck or any other potentially dangerous areas. It's a beginner-friendly shibari tie that allows you to master the diamond pattern that Shibari enthusiasts adore. What I love most about tying a Karada is that you can let your imagination run wild and create your own variations and modifications.

Shibari tie #3: Gote or TK

Gote, also known as TK (short for takate kote), is a foundational knot used in Shibari and is a prerequisite for those interested in suspension play. This knot serves as the base for many other ties and is widely popular among Shibari artists.

However, it's crucial to approach Gote with caution. Due to its complexity and potential risks, it's essential to thoroughly research safety guidelines before attempting it. Proper placement of the ropes is vital to prevent nerve damage or injury to the model's hand. If you're interested in learning Gote safely, I recommend checking out my safety guide included into the free course.

One of the significant benefits of tying Gote is that it teaches you effective communication with your model. You'll need to continually check their comfort level, ask for feedback, and ensure they feel secure throughout the tying process. It's also a great opportunity to practice your communication skills and learn how to make adjustments accordingly.

Shibari Tie #4: Ladder Tie

The ladder tie is an excellent knot for practicing on yourself or creating beautiful aesthetic ties on your model. It helps familiarize you with rope tension and emphasizes the importance of maintaining proper tension throughout your Shibari sessions. Losing tension can lead to the knot unraveling or the ropes slipping off, compromising the safety and effectiveness of the tie.

Similar to the other knots mentioned, the ladder tie allows for creativity and personalization. You can experiment with different patterns and techniques, helping you develop your own unique style within the art of Shibari. Additionally, tying the ladder tie on yourself can provide insight into how your model may feel during the experience, enhancing your understanding as a Shibari practitioner.

Shibari Tie #5: Webs

Shibari webs are visually stunning and can be used to highlight the natural curves and beauty of the body. They offer loads of room for creativity and exploration as you don't follow a set structure or pattern, and there isn't the need for the symmetry that is found in some other styles of shibari ties. Webs can be tied almost anywhere on the body, allowing you to experiment with various patterns and styles.

To begin learning webs, it's helpful to understand the basic pattern and then build upon it using your imagination. However, it's crucial to prioritize the model's comfort and safety, avoiding any suspensions that could put undue strain on the body. Take the time to communicate with your model throughout the tying process, ensuring their satisfaction and comfort.

Practicing webs on inanimate objects can also be an effective way to refine your technique and develop your own unique patterns. As you continue to experiment, each web will differ slightly from the previous one, allowing you to continuously expand your knowledge and creativity within the world of Shibari.
