During the quarantine I had a lot of time to explore the aspect of self-tying within my own shibari journey. And I noticed that it helped me to become more aware of my body and that rope is one more way to have that necessary “me-time”. Just me, doing it for me. And the self-love that came with it.

Self-tying is about your ability to connect with yourself and turn the rope into an extension of your hands, so you can give yourself a great cuddle.

Start from just 10 minutes, turn on your favorite music, and practice a knot, or just let it go with the flow and enjoy the sensation. Rope can help you explore every inch of your body, while slowly tying and untying, playing with the tension, moving with the music.

What I feel about self-tying:

  • Self-tying is great for practicing knots, checking if what you are doing is safe and creating new ties (obviously).
  • If you stop trying to do complicated knots and concentrate on how your body ACTUALLY likes to feel the rope, you can discover a surprise… Your body doesn’t care, how difficult your knots are. It’s only your eyes.
  • Self-tying It is about your ability to connect with yourself and turn the rope into an extension of your hands, so you can give yourself a great cuddle.
  • Self-tying can be like a dance. Do it as if nobody sees you;)
  • You don’t need to do suspensions to get new sensations. It is all about the pressure of rope you are applying, some floor knots can get you close to the suspension sensation.
  • If you are trying a rope meditation, rope helps to stay present and feel your body better.
  • I don’t see myself getting into a «subspace» doing self-shibari, but, I am getting into a great relaxed state.

Do you prefer to self-tie, or tie on a model?

Maybe you can challenge yourself to try self-tying this week and see if you can find the self-love!
