What is Shibari Meditation?

Shibari meditation is the process of conscious self-tying with ropes. By using simple knots, the practitioner is able to free themselves from the distractions of the outside world and their own thoughts, instead focusing on the gradual movements of the ropes and becoming more aware of every inch of their body.

Rope meditation always begins with greeting the ropes, deepening the breath, and setting an intention for the practice. It then involves slow tying that is connected to the breath, a pause to explore the sensations, and gradually untying the knots while maintaining tension. The meditation ends with a warm feeling of love and warmth for oneself.

Why Try Rope Meditation?

Ropes can be a powerful tool for clearing the mind. As you concentrate on how your body feels while embracing the restrictions of the ropes, you give your mind an opportunity to relax and let go of unwanted tension.

There are also several other benefits to having ropes and concentrating on them:

  • It helps to ease the process of concentration and staying in the moment.
  • It can bring a great number of emotions and discoveries about the body and mind.
  • It helps you to focus on your body and feel every inch of it.
  • By restricting your body and allowing it to relax, you give room for your thoughts and become an observer.

The Story Behind Shibari Meditation

I've been practicing shibari meditation on my own for over a year, and in June 2020, I had the opportunity to share the experience with others. I've always been interested in finding ways to connect with myself more deeply, and I've experimented with various forms of meditation. However, I found that some types of meditation work better for me than others. I noticed that I'm able to fully relax when I'm tying ropes, and that's when I decided to combine rope work with some meditation techniques to create shibari meditation.

Like the seasons and environment around me, my meditations also change. Currently, I'm doing meditations that are inspired by the sand and ocean, with a tribal vibe. I use blue and natural jute ropes, specific music, and incense during my sessions.

I can offer online shibari meditation sessions with a group on Patreon, but now I want to share the full experience with you. If you're interested in trying shibari meditation for yourself, please reach out to me.
